چکیده
We report a prototype CO2 gas sensor based on a simple blackbody infrared source and a spectrally narrow quantum cascade detector (QCD). The detector absorption spectrum is centered at 2260 cm−1 (4.4 μm) and has a full width at half maximum of 200 cm−1 (25 meV). It covers strong absorption bands of two spectrally overlapping CO2 isotopomers, namely the P-branch of CO2 and the R-branch of CO2. Acquisition of the spectral information and data treatment were performed in a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. By flushing its sample compartment either with nitrogen, dry fresh air, ambient air, or human breath, we were able to determine CO2 concentrations corresponding to the different gas mixtures. A detection limit of 500 ppb was obtained in these experiments.

An optical absorption sensor for gas chromatography (GC) is presented. It consists of a quantum cascade laser along with a long piece of Hollow Waveguide for Infrared (HWIR) transmission inserted into the GC line. It measures the infrared absorption in each individual gas peak after separation by the GC column, and maintains the shapes of gas peaks after the HWIR sensor, making the gas samples ...

Two mid-infrared light sources, a broadband source from a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) and a pulsed Quantum Cascade (QC) Laser, are used to measure angle-resolved backscattering in vivo from human skin across a broad spectral range. Scattering profiles measured using the FTIR suggest limited penetration of the light into the skin, with most of the light interacting with the st...

Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) have become important laser sources for accessing the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral range, achieving watt-level continuous wave operation in a compact package at room temperature. However, up to now, wavelength tuning, which is desirable for most applications, has relied on external cavity feedback or exhibited a limited monolithic tuning range. Here we demonstrat...
